Trump touts 'merger' between Ireland and Northern Ireland

Donald Trump suggested a possible 'merger' between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland during a St Patrick's Day event in Washington, raising concerns about further strain in relations between the United Kingdom and the United States. Speaking at the Friends of Ireland Luncheon, he praised Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin for getting along well, adding that he 'loves mergers' and joking that his remarks could cause trouble.

The comments come amid an ongoing public dispute between Mr Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the crisis involving Iran. Mr Trump has criticized Sir Keir for not being supportive enough of American military action and for initially refusing to allow the United States to use British air bases. Tensions have also risen over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil supplies that has been disrupted by Iranian strikes.

During a meeting at the White House, Mr Martin emphasized the importance of strong ties between Europe and the United States and defended Sir Keir as a constructive leader capable of maintaining good relations. While some Irish political leaders boycotted the Washington events in protest of Mr Trump's policies on Gaza, Mr Martin attended and expressed hope that transatlantic cooperation could be strengthened despite recent disagreements.
