Israel's air force has significantly degraded Iran's layered air defense network over two major campaigns, first during the twelve day war in June 2025 and again in the current conflict. After previously eliminating Iran's most advanced Russian made systems in late 2024, Israel focused on destroying the remaining mobile long range missile batteries, eliminating about half of them in June 2025 and roughly ninety two percent overall to date.
Mid tier systems, including an Iranian version of a pre 1979 United States supplied surface to air missile platform, were also heavily targeted. Despite their age, these systems can strike aircraft at distances of up to seventy five kilometers. Israel has destroyed roughly three quarters of these launchers in both phases of fighting, along with about eighty percent of older anti aircraft systems and a similar share of long range radar installations.
While Iranian forces have launched dozens of missiles at Israeli aircraft and reported at least one close call, no Israeli crewed aircraft have been shot down. Short range defenses have downed between ten and twenty Israeli drones, many of which were considered expendable, including one way attack drones, underscoring Israel's continued air superiority.
