The Netherlands is increasing security for Iranian dissidents after a 36-year-old police official of Iranian descent was seriously injured in a shooting. The man, who is known for being critical of the authorities in Tehran, was attacked on Thursday morning. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Justice Minister David van Weel said the Public Prosecution Service is considering all possible scenarios. While officials have not confirmed any link to Iran, the victim’s background has prompted national security and counterterrorism officials, police, and local authorities to heighten protective measures.
The incident comes amid heightened international tensions involving Iran, following weeks of military conflict with Israel and the United States that has had broader global repercussions.
