An Iranian man and a Romanian woman have been charged after allegedly attempting to enter the Royal Navy base at Faslane in Scotland, where Britain’s nuclear submarines are stationed. Police said the 34-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were arrested on Thursday and are scheduled to appear in court in Dumbarton.
The Faslane base houses the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent, including four submarines armed with ballistic missiles. Authorities have not released further details about the alleged breach attempt, but the incident comes amid heightened concerns about Iranian espionage activities in Britain.
Tensions have risen as the United Kingdom has allowed the United States to use certain British bases for operations related to the conflict involving Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of putting British lives at risk by permitting the bases to be used for what he described as aggression against Iran.
