Iran launched missiles toward Diego Garcia, a remote Indian Ocean island that hosts a major military base operated by the United States and the United Kingdom. British officials condemned what they called 'reckless attacks,' though the missiles did not reach the island. The base, located about 2,500 miles from Iran, plays a central role in security operations across the Middle East, South Asia, and East Africa.
Diego Garcia supports roughly 2,500 personnel, mostly American, and has been used in conflicts from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. It has also hosted nuclear-capable bombers and supported air campaigns in the region. While Britain says the base is limited to specific defensive operations, Iran has warned that allowing strikes from British territory risks drawing the United Kingdom further into conflict.
The island is part of the Chagos Archipelago, which Britain has controlled since the nineteenth century. Thousands of residents were forcibly removed decades ago to make way for the base. Following international pressure, Britain agreed to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing back the base for at least ninety-nine years, though the deal faces political opposition and uncertainty after criticism from United States President Donald Trump.
