Why the UK needs to be wary of Iranian retaliation

Iran recently attempted to strike the joint United States and United Kingdom military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, launching a missile from more than 2,500 miles away. Although the attack was unsuccessful, it has raised concerns about Tehran’s willingness to target British-linked assets far beyond the immediate region of conflict.

An Israeli military spokesperson suggested that London itself could be vulnerable to an Iranian ballistic missile strike. The warning comes as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has permitted the use of British air bases for United States operations responding to threats in the Strait of Hormuz, increasing the risk of Britain being drawn more directly into escalating tensions.

Security experts are now assessing whether Iran has the capability to retaliate directly against the United Kingdom and examining the strength of Britain’s air defences. Analysts are also considering alternative methods Tehran could use to threaten British interests, including indirect or asymmetric actions.
