A British couple who moved to Dubai believing it would offer a safer and more prosperous life than London have returned to Croydon following regional conflict and a personal family tragedy. Jason Kwao, 29, and his wife Sumekka, 28, relocated in 2023 to launch a sales agency and raise their children, eventually settling into a three bedroom villa near the beach.
Despite business success and a comfortable lifestyle, Jason said the city began to feel 'plastic and not real', with too much emphasis on money and transactions and not enough sense of community. Tensions in the region, marked by nearby missile strikes, along with the death of his brother Joshua, prompted the family to reassess their future.
After travelling to several countries, the couple found themselves drawn to Ghana, where they felt a stronger sense of community and family values. Now back in the United Kingdom temporarily, they are considering a permanent move there, saying they want to raise their children in an environment focused on unconditional love and togetherness rather than financial success alone.
