A United States-based technology professional said he was asked to give up his pre-booked aisle seat on an international flight so that another passenger could sit next to his brother. The traveler, Saran Shanmugam, who was flying to India on a Middle Eastern airline, declined the request, stating that he had specifically chosen the aisle seat for comfort on the long journey.
According to his social media post, the other passenger reacted by demanding assistance from a flight attendant. The situation briefly escalated, and the passenger was escorted off the plane before being allowed to return a few minutes later. After reboarding, he did not raise the issue again.
The incident went viral online, sparking widespread debate about in-flight etiquette, passengers' rights to retain pre-selected seats, and whether travelers are obligated to accommodate such requests. Many users supported Shanmugam's decision to keep his seat, while others discussed the balance between courtesy and personal choice during air travel.
