Republican senators voted down a resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval before launching future military strikes against Iran. The measure failed by a vote of 47 to 53, with Senator Rand Paul joining Democrats in support and Senator John Fetterman siding with Republicans to oppose it.
This marks the third unsuccessful attempt by Democrats to curb the president’s war powers since the latest conflict between the United States and Iran began. An earlier effort in March to limit the president’s authority over military action related to Iran was also blocked in the Senate.
Democrats have vowed to continue forcing votes on the issue until Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth testify publicly before Congress. While lawmakers have received classified briefings, the Republican-led Congress has yet to hold open oversight hearings on the conflict.
