Iran's mines, mobile missiles, drones & geography: Why reopening Strait of Hormuz is no easy task

The Strait of Hormuz has become the central flashpoint in an escalating conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel, transforming the world’s most critical oil transit route into a volatile maritime chokehold. In response to joint military pressure and the killing of its long-serving supreme leader, Iran has restricted passage through the narrow waterway, allowing limited access only to what it calls friendly nations while blocking vessels linked to its adversaries. Nearly 500 tankers now sit idle, sending global oil prices higher and intensifying economic uncertainty.

Reopening the strait poses severe military and logistical challenges. Its narrow and shallow geography places ships within easy reach of Iran’s mountainous coastline, where mobile missiles, drones and hidden batteries can be rapidly deployed. Even heavily armed naval escorts would face compressed reaction times, while the threat of sea mines could delay safe passage for weeks. Analysts warn that clearing and securing the route would require a large, sustained military operation with no guarantee of preventing further strikes.

The United States initially threatened force to reopen the passage but has since paused planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure as diplomatic talks show tentative progress. Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly imposed a controlled transit system under military supervision and warned it could expand disruptions to another strategic chokepoint, the Bab al Mandeb Strait. Experts caution that only a political and diplomatic settlement can fully restore confidence in global shipping lanes and stabilize energy markets.
