A supermarket chain in the Gulf is transporting thousands of bags of Walkers crisps and packets of sweets by road from the United Kingdom to the United Arab Emirates to avoid disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. The trial shipment includes 22,000 bags of crisps and 9,500 packets of sweets, travelling लगभग 5,500 miles across 11 countries and expected to take about three weeks.
The lorry departed from Ashford in Middlesex and will pass through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Italy before continuing by sea to Egypt, then onward through Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates. The move comes after Iran imposed restrictions on cargo ships using the Strait of Hormuz, sharply reducing maritime traffic and disrupting regional supply chains.
Spinneys said the alternative route is intended to maintain fully stocked shelves during the conflict. The company has not yet passed on additional transport costs to customers but said the situation remains under review as regional tensions continue to affect trade and oil shipments.
