Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky toured the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to share Ukraine’s experience defending against Iranian-made drones used extensively by Russia. As Gulf states face intensified missile and drone attacks from Iran, Zelensky positioned Ukraine as a frontline partner with hard-earned expertise in air defense and civilian protection developed over four years of full-scale war.
During the visit, Ukraine promoted joint defense cooperation and long-term security partnerships, including a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia on defense procurement. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is not only seeking assistance but is prepared to export its drone interception systems and strategic know-how, framing collaboration as mutually beneficial for regional stability and economic growth.
The outreach also highlighted shifting geopolitical dynamics. While Gulf leaders offered Zelensky a warm reception, tensions have grown between the United States and European allies over how to approach both Russia and Iran. Disagreements within the Group of Seven and strains with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization underscore uncertainty about Western strategy as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East increasingly intersect.
As Iran’s regional role expands and global powers reassess their positions, Ukraine and Gulf countries appear to be drawing closer in pursuit of clarity and security within a more multipolar world order.
