Iranian-backed militias in Iraq escalated their campaign of attacks in the Kurdistan Region by targeting the residence of regional President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok. The strike is part of a broader pattern of more than 400 attacks against the autonomous region, alongside hundreds more in Baghdad, including incidents aimed at foreign diplomatic facilities.

The assault came days after Iran launched missiles at Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Iraq, killing six fighters. Iraqi and Kurdish leaders condemned the drone attack, with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani urging Baghdad to hold those responsible accountable and calling on international partners to support the region’s security.

France strongly denounced the attack, reaffirming its backing for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Iraqi political figures across sectarian lines also criticized the strike, while Iranian officials publicly distanced themselves from the incident despite longstanding ties to the militias involved.
