Tourists are flocking to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in the Greek village of Ropoto after it tilted to an extraordinary 17 degrees, far steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Despite the dramatic angle, the church remains standing and structurally stable, turning it into an unlikely attraction.
Ropoto, located about 30 kilometers southwest of Trikala in the Thessaly region, was once home to around 300 households. In 2012, a powerful landslide caused much of the village to slide down a hillside, cracking homes, destroying roads, and forcing residents to evacuate. Although there had been longstanding concerns about unstable ground, warnings were largely ignored, and the settlement was eventually abandoned.
Amid the destruction, the church endured, frozen at its steep incline without significant further movement. Visitors now venture inside the slanted building, describing a disorienting experience as they climb tilted steps and navigate the skewed interior, where dizziness is almost guaranteed.
