Long queues in Myanmar as Iran war fuel crisis deepens

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz following United States and Israeli strikes on Iran has triggered a global energy shock, driving up oil prices and disrupting shipping routes. With nearly ninety percent of the oil and gas passing through the strait normally destined for Asian markets, supplies have been severely curtailed since the conflict began.

In Myanmar, the impact has been immediate and visible. Long queues have formed outside petrol stations as drivers scramble to secure limited supplies, reflecting the country’s heavy reliance on imported fuel.

Military-backed authorities, already grappling with an ongoing civil war since May 2021, have introduced strict fuel controls. Private vehicles are now subject to an alternate-day system, and fuel purchases have been capped at thirty-five litres per week, deepening the strain on daily life and economic activity.
