The rehabilitation of Kibbutz Be'eri reached a significant milestone with the start of demolition and debris removal in the Zaytim neighborhood, which was devastated during the October 7 massacre. The first home to be torn down belonged to the Gat family, whose lives were shattered in the attack. Kinneret Gat was killed near the house, and her daughter Carmel was abducted to Gaza, where she was held for 11 months before being murdered.
Eshel Gat watched as bulldozers cleared what remained of the family home, describing it as the destruction of an entire life cut short by violence. He said that while the memories remain with him, the physical structure is not a symbol or memorial. For the family, remembrance will not be rooted in bricks and walls.
Instead, the Gats plan to honor Kinneret and Carmel through a social and experiential initiative centered on action and connection to the land. A relay race scheduled for May 15, 2026 will trace a route from Yagur in the Carmel region to Tzemach by the Sea of Galilee, inviting the public to run or walk in their memory and celebrate the values of compassion, faith in humanity, and justice that defined their lives.
