French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israel and Iran to avoid dragging Lebanon deeper into the escalating Middle East conflict, warning that the country must not be drawn into another war. His appeal came as panic spread through Beirut following Israeli evacuation orders in the city's southern suburbs and parts of eastern Lebanon.
Macron said he had proposed a plan to halt hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, including increased military support for the Lebanese Armed Forces. He called on Hezbollah to immediately stop firing into Israel and urged Israel to refrain from launching ground operations or large-scale attacks on Lebanese territory.
Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Beirut and southern Lebanon have killed more than 100 people and displaced at least 80,000, while Hezbollah has responded with rocket fire across the border. Lebanese leaders have asked France to press for a ceasefire and prevent further attacks on Beirut.
France has pledged armored vehicles, logistical backing and humanitarian aid to Lebanon, while Lebanese authorities have committed to asserting control over areas held by Hezbollah. Macron also stressed that Hezbollah must disarm to safeguard Lebanon's national interests and stability.
