A portion of an 18th century Torah scroll that was hidden during the Holocaust has been discovered and presented by local artist Viktor Vasilyuk. The scroll was found in the home of his relatives, though the exact circumstances of how it came into the family's possession remain unclear. Local accounts suggest it may have originally belonged to members of his own family.
According to family testimony, Vasilyuk's relatives fled the Novogrudok Ghetto during the Nazi occupation and changed their surname, while his mother's maiden name was Katz. As they escaped, they left behind a parchment Torah scroll that had been concealed in the attic of a rural house under straw. The parchment sheets were reportedly even used to cover the floor in an apparent effort to hide them from discovery.
