A 29-year-old Palestinian man, Odeh Awawdeh, was shot dead during an apparent extremist settler attack in the West Bank town of Deir Dibwan, near Ramallah. According to Palestinian officials, a group of armed settlers entered the town, sparking a confrontation with local residents. Awawdeh was reportedly shot in the back and later died at a hospital from his wounds.
The Israeli military said its forces were dispatched after receiving reports that settlers had entered the village. It acknowledged reports that a Palestinian was killed by gunfire but stated that soldiers did not fire at residents, indicating that an Israeli civilian was responsible. Security forces later escorted settlers out of the town and detained several Palestinians, who were subsequently released.
Police said several Israeli suspects were detained for questioning and that an investigation had been launched. The killing followed other recent settler attacks in the West Bank, including arson incidents and additional fatal shootings. Rights groups say such violence has increased in recent weeks and criticize authorities for failing to prevent attacks or secure convictions in most cases.
