A surge in deadly incidents in the occupied West Bank has led to a sharp rise in the killing of Palestinian teenagers, with an average of one minor killed each week since a major Israeli military operation began in January 2025, according to the United Nations children's agency. Seventy teenagers, most aged 15 to 16, have been killed so far this year, the majority by Israeli forces.

Among them was 15-year-old Youssef Shtayyeh, who was shot near his home in Nablus after allegedly throwing stones at soldiers. Witnesses said soldiers opened fire after stopping their vehicles near a group of youths. Medical staff reported that he suffered a fatal gunshot wound that entered through his back and exited his chest.

The Israeli military said in multiple cases that those killed had hurled stones at troops and that soldiers followed standard arrest procedures before opening fire. Military officials have described stone-throwing as terrorism. Families of the victims question the use of lethal force, arguing that throwing stones does not justify deadly shootings.

Doctors in the region say injuries have become increasingly severe since the escalation of violence following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, with more gunshot wounds to the head and chest. For grieving families, the deaths have left lasting voids, as communities continue to mourn teenagers killed in confrontations with heavily armed soldiers.
