New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing mounting criticism over his response to recent antisemitic incidents, including violent clashes outside Park East Synagogue and the appearance of swastika graffiti across Queens. City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino accused the mayor of creating a dangerous environment and failing to clearly condemn protesters, saying his leadership has emboldened harmful behavior.
The protest erupted during an event at the synagogue and led to confrontations with the New York Police Department as demonstrators attempted to breach barricades. Mamdani’s office said that displays of support for terrorist organizations and antisemitic acts were unacceptable, though the mayor also voiced strong opposition to the real estate event being held at the synagogue, citing concerns about land sales in the West Bank.
Days earlier, swastikas were spray-painted on synagogues, homes, cars, a Jewish community center, and a Holocaust memorial plaque in Queens. Police released surveillance footage of four suspects sought in connection with the vandalism. City Council Speaker Julie Menin condemned both the graffiti and the synagogue protest, highlighting legislative efforts to strengthen protections for houses of worship, while critics noted that Mamdani previously vetoed a related school protection measure.
The incidents have intensified debate over how the city, home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel, should address rising antisemitism and ensure the safety of Jewish residents.
