The United States military is considering renaming its Iran war campaign 'Operation Sledgehammer' if the current ceasefire collapses and President Donald Trump resumes active combat operations, according to officials cited by the National Broadcasting Company. Any renewed offensive would operate under a new name, though 'Operation Sledgehammer' is not the only option under discussion.
Officials said the United States now has significantly more firepower and capability in the region than when 'Operation Epic Fury' began in late February. United States Central Command continues to enforce a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, maintaining a defensive posture during the ceasefire.
Renaming the campaign could allow the administration to argue that a new operation is separate from 'Operation Epic Fury,' potentially avoiding the requirement to seek congressional approval after sixty days under the War Powers Resolution of 1973. The administration maintains that the sixty-day threshold has not been reached because active combat operations stopped after forty days when the ceasefire was announced.
