'Famine', 'starvation': the challenges in defining Gaza's plight

Gaza is facing a severe food crisis, with international organizations warning of imminent famine as malnutrition and starvation rates soar. The situation is compounded by ongoing conflict, restrictions on aid deliveries, and the destruction of agricultural land, making food both scarce and unaffordable for most residents. Aid groups and the World Health Organization have described the crisis as 'man-made mass starvation', but gathering the data required for an official famine declaration is extremely difficult due to access restrictions and continuous displacement of the population. While technical debates continue over the formal definition of famine, humanitarian groups stress that urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life, as the current aid reaching Gaza falls far short of what is needed.
