A new survey by the Smith Research Institute, commissioned by Hiddush, shows a decline in support among Jewish Israelis for recognizing all types of marriage, dropping to 60 percent from 67 percent last year. The poll, conducted ahead of the Jewish holiday of love, highlights a consistent majority in favor of ending the Chief Rabbinate's exclusive control over marriage, though the latest results indicate a slight decrease. The proportion of those preferring non-Orthodox marriage ceremonies also fell, with a range of alternative preferences including Conservative, Reform, civil weddings abroad, online ceremonies, and cohabitation without formal marriage. Currently, Orthodox ceremonies are the only legal option for Jewish couples marrying in Israel, but marriages and civil unions performed abroad, as well as online weddings, are recognized by the state.
