PM says he's ordered talks on freeing all hostages, ending war, alongside Gaza assault

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he has ordered immediate negotiations for the release of all hostages held in Gaza, while simultaneously moving forward with military plans to take control of Gaza City. This statement comes after Hamas accepted a ceasefire proposal that would see half of the hostages freed and talks begin to end the war, but Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will only agree to a comprehensive deal for all remaining captives.

Netanyahu's comments were delivered outside the Israel Defense Force's Gaza Division headquarters, where he was meeting with defense officials to approve the offensive, despite concerns that such actions could complicate diplomatic efforts. The Prime Minister's Office clarified that no Israeli delegation has been dispatched for talks yet, pending the determination of a negotiation location.

The proposed deal, previously accepted by the Israeli government, would involve a phased release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, alongside a ceasefire and further negotiations. However, Netanyahu has insisted on conditions that include the complete disarmament and removal of Hamas from power, terms which Hamas has rejected. Critics argue that prolonging the war endangers the remaining hostages and question Netanyahu's motives.

Families of hostages have called on the government to prioritize negotiations over military action, fearing that continued conflict will jeopardize the lives of those still held in Gaza. Netanyahu maintains that the defeat of Hamas and the release of hostages must be achieved together, asserting that Israel is close to a decisive victory.
