Israel has killed Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen, in an airstrike on the capital Sana, according to Houthi officials. Al-Rahawi was the highest-ranking Houthi official to die in the conflict so far, though his position was largely symbolic and real power remains with the group's leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi. The attack marks an escalation in Israel's campaign to halt Houthi missile and drone strikes, which began after the war in Gaza erupted and have targeted Israeli cities and disrupted global shipping in the Red Sea.
Despite the loss, the Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks until Israel ends its military operations in Gaza. The group, backed by Iran, has faced repeated airstrikes from Israel, but these have not stopped its operations. The ongoing conflict has worsened conditions for Yemeni civilians, increasing the cost of essential goods and deepening the humanitarian crisis in the country.
