President said mulling commuting sentence of extremist who killed 7 Palestinians if hostage deal reached

President Isaac Herzog is reportedly considering commuting the sentence of Ami Popper, a right-wing extremist convicted of killing seven Palestinian workers in 1990, if a hostage-ceasefire deal with Hamas is reached. Popper, who was originally sentenced to multiple life terms, had his sentence reduced to 40 years and is scheduled for release in 2030. The Justice Ministry and the President's Residence are said to be reviewing requests from Jewish security prisoners to shorten their sentences as a possible counterbalance to the expected release of Palestinian prisoners under a potential deal. Herzog's office has stated that no decision has been made and that any action would depend on the outcome of negotiations.
