'No one saw it coming': Israeli commander recounts October 7 attack

Israeli commander Amit Govrin recounted the chaos and horror of the October 7 attack, which began with a sudden barrage of alerts and quickly escalated into the deadliest assault on Israel in decades. Govrin, thrust from leave into combat, described driving through deserted streets and witnessing scenes of devastation in Sderot, including burned vehicles and civilian casualties. He and his unit improvised under fire, rescuing residents and engaging in close-quarters battles with militants hiding among civilians.

Over two days, Govrin's team evacuated settlements and fought to secure the area, relying on quick decisions and minimal equipment. The fighting continued for months, culminating in intense urban combat and personal sacrifice, including Govrin losing sight in one eye. Reflecting on the toll, he expressed pride in his service but mourned the lives lost and the ongoing conflict.

Govrin emphasized that peace depends on the return of hostages and the removal of the militant regime in Gaza, acknowledging the challenges ahead. Now pursuing further education, he hopes to contribute to national security in new ways, while the region continues to grapple with the aftermath and hopes for an end to the war.
