Eoin Hayes has been appointed as the Social Democrats' spokesman on social protection, following a period of controversy. Last month, images resurfaced of Hayes wearing blackface as part of a Barack Obama costume at a Halloween party 16 years ago, which he described as a 'huge mistake' and for which he has apologized, condemning racism in all forms. Hayes had previously been suspended from the parliamentary party after giving incorrect statements about shares he held in a company linked to the Israeli military, but was readmitted in July. Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns expressed confidence in Hayes, stating he will work hard on behalf of vulnerable people and provide strong opposition to the Government.
