China's Own Immigration Backlash

China's recent introduction of a new visa for skilled foreign workers has sparked an unexpected backlash among its citizens. Instead of embracing the move as a step toward attracting global talent, many in China reacted with concern and hostility, especially on social media. Fears about increased immigration, potential impacts on youth unemployment, and xenophobic sentiments were widely expressed, particularly targeting groups perceived as likely to benefit from the policy.

China has little history of inbound immigration, and foreigners often face practical and cultural challenges when moving to the country. While the government has made efforts to attract top scientists and researchers, including offering special assistance to prominent hires, broader integration remains difficult. Even Chinese nationals returning after years abroad report challenges in readjusting to the country's political and social environment.

Despite these obstacles, China continues to make progress in drawing talent, with more Chinese scholars choosing to return home rather than stay abroad. However, the strong public resistance to the new visa highlights that China must address significant social and institutional hurdles before it can truly become a global hub for skilled workers.
