On October 7, 2023, Outpost Sufa and the nearby Dangour Monument became the scene of one of the fiercest battles during a surprise assault on Israel's southern border. Hundreds of terrorists attempted to breach the border and overrun nearby communities, but a small group of Israeli soldiers and reservists, aided by a single tank crew, fought for hours to repel the attackers. The tank, commanded by Lt. A, played a decisive role, firing dozens of shells and preventing multiple waves of infiltrators from reaching civilian areas.
Inside the outpost, the defenders endured relentless attacks, including mortars, automatic fire, and grenades. With communication cut off and medical supplies running out, wounded soldiers and medics continued to fight and care for each other under dire conditions. The battle lasted from dawn until afternoon, ending only when a naval commando unit arrived to help clear the base.
Fourteen Israeli soldiers lost their lives and about fifty were wounded in the fighting, but their stand prevented a much larger incursion into the surrounding kibbutzim. Survivors described moments of intense fear, loss, and camaraderie, emphasizing the extraordinary spirit and sacrifice shown by all who defended the outpost that day.
