UJA federation: 74,000 Jewish households in New York set to lose food assistance due to US government shutdown

The UJA-Federation of New York reports that 74,000 Jewish households in New York City are at risk of losing food assistance as the federal government shutdown threatens the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The program, which provides an average of $187 per month for food to lower-income families, is set to expire on Saturday, affecting millions nationwide. UJA acknowledges New York Governor Kathy Hochul's allocation of $65 million in emergency funding to support food providers, including those affiliated with the federation. According to a 2023 report, 12% of Jewish households in New York are classified as poor and 8% as near poor, with larger families making up about 24% of the Jewish population in these categories.
