Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has stated that Iraq can only fully disarm armed factions once the US-led coalition withdraws from the country, with a complete exit expected by September 2026. Sudani emphasized that the presence of foreign forces is seen by some groups as an occupation, making disarmament difficult until their departure. He also highlighted significant US investment in Iraq's energy sector, including major agreements with American companies to boost power generation and oil production, aiming for energy self-sufficiency and ending gas imports from Iran by 2027.
Sudani is confident about winning a second term in Iraq's upcoming elections, campaigning on his record of infrastructure development and completion of stalled projects. While his administration has delivered visible improvements in roads and public works, the ambitious spending has expanded the state bureaucracy and raised concerns about fiscal sustainability. Sudani maintains that Iraq's wealth can support these reforms, but warns that delays in implementation could undermine progress.
