Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari raised alarm over what he described as the 'weaponization of water' by India, accusing it of violating the Indus Waters Treaty during his speech at the World Summit for Social Development in Doha. The treaty, signed in 1960, has governed water sharing between the two countries for decades, but recent tensions have escalated as India expands hydropower projects and, following a militant attack, announced a suspension of the agreement. Zardari warned that any move to cut Pakistan's water supply would be considered an act of war and stressed the threat to millions of Pakistanis.

Beyond the water dispute, Zardari endorsed the summit's declaration for global solidarity, poverty eradication, and sustainable growth. He highlighted Pakistan's social welfare efforts, including the Benazir Income Support Programme, and announced ambitious plans for literacy and climate resilience. The president also condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reaffirming Pakistan's support for Palestinian and Kashmiri self-determination, and called for reforms in global financial systems to ensure fair development funding.
