A new Emirati feature film, The Desert Beyond, will soon begin production, focusing on the journey of the Arab world's first fictional female astronaut. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Darg, the drama follows Maryam, a young engineer navigating a challenging selection process to become the nation's first female astronaut, while grappling with personal and cultural expectations. The film is inspired by the achievements of the United Arab Emirates' space program and the milestone of Nora Al-Matrooshi, the country's first female astronaut. Supported by the Dubai Films and Games Commission, the project aims to celebrate women's empowerment in science and innovation, with casting set to begin this month and plans for both theatrical and streaming releases.
