A water company director told an inquest that future flooding at the site where Philip and Elaine Marco drowned in Liverpool cannot be completely ruled out. The couple died in August 2023 after their car was submerged during torrential rain, with rainfall described as similar to a 'monsoon'. The inquest heard that the area's bowl-like geography and aging Victorian-era sewage infrastructure contribute to the flood risk, which has been exacerbated by urban development and more paved surfaces. United Utilities is installing a deep water tank and flow control device in the area to reduce the frequency of flooding, but officials say the risk will only be reduced, not eliminated, with the likelihood of flooding dropping from once every four years to once a decade. The inquest continues as calls grow for a permanent solution.
