Intelligence minister Esmail Khatib stated that enemies seek to harm the supreme leader through assassination attempts and hostile actions, labeling those involved as infiltrating agents. While such claims are not uncommon, direct warnings about threats to Khamenei have been rare, especially before the recent conflict between Iran and Israel. During that conflict, Israel targeted senior Iranian figures and sites, with the United States later joining in strikes on nuclear facilities. Reports also surfaced that a plan to assassinate Khamenei was considered but ultimately vetoed to avoid further escalation.
