Palestinian residents of Al-Eizariya, a town near Jerusalem, are facing a wave of demolition and evacuation notices for their homes and businesses. Many link these actions to Israel's recent approval of a major settlement project known as E1, which aims to build thousands of housing units and connect Jerusalem with a large nearby settlement. Residents say building permits are nearly impossible to obtain, and fear the project will devastate the local economy, displace families, and harm tourism in the historic town.
The E1 plan has drawn international condemnation, with critics warning it threatens the possibility of a contiguous Palestinian state and will further isolate Palestinian communities. The project includes new infrastructure that would restrict Palestinian access to roads and force longer travel routes. Local officials and business owners warn that the settlement expansion will lead to the loss of livelihoods, displacement of Bedouin communities, and a dramatic demographic shift in the area. Despite the mounting pressures, many residents insist they will not leave their land.
