Likud lawmaker Dan Illouz has voiced strong opposition to a proposed bill regulating ultra-Orthodox military enlistment, arguing that the legislation fails to deliver meaningful change and could undermine recent progress. In a letter to committee chairman Boaz Bismuth, Illouz criticized the bill for offering ineffective sanctions and continuing exemptions for full-time yeshiva students, which he claims would not incentivize enlistment or support socioeconomic integration. Illouz called for tougher sanctions, a narrower definition of who qualifies as ultra-Orthodox, and a minimum quota for combat recruits, as well as recognition of yeshivas that combine religious study with military service. The bill has faced criticism from coalition members, opposition figures, and legal advisers since its release, with Illouz warning that passing it without significant amendments could be worse than maintaining the current system.
