Ethiopian Airlines has commenced construction on a new airport in Bishoftu, aiming to create the largest aviation hub on the continent by 2030. The project, valued at $12.5 billion, will feature four runways, parking for 270 planes, and the capacity to handle 110 million passengers annually, far surpassing the country's current main airport.
Funding for the airport will be split between the airline and international lenders, with significant interest from financial institutions across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, China, and the United States. The initial phase of earthworks has already received $610 million, with major construction set to begin in August 2026.
Officials highlight the airport's role in supporting Ethiopia's growing aviation sector, as the current airport nears its operational limits. Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand its network and revenues, reinforcing its position as the continent's leading carrier.
