Inside the bleak prison conditions of alleged Bondi Beach terrorist

Naveed Akram, accused of carrying out a deadly attack at Bondi Beach, is currently held in extreme isolation at Australia's most secure prison, Goulburn Supermax. Akram spends at least 16 hours a day alone in a cell designed for high-risk inmates, monitored around the clock by electronic surveillance. Strict protocols are in place to separate him from other notorious criminals, and his interactions, including family visits, are tightly controlled.

The prison's harsh conditions include frequent lockdowns and limited privileges, with Akram classified as a high-risk inmate due to the nature of his alleged offences. He is permitted supervised exercise and family visits, but all conversations must be in English and are closely monitored. Legal visits are observed, and most phone calls are recorded.

In response to the attack, the government has announced a Royal Commission to investigate antisemitism and religious extremism, led by former High Court Justice Virginia Bell. The inquiry will examine the circumstances of the Bondi Beach incident and recommend measures to strengthen social cohesion in Australia.
