Brothers David and Ariel Cunio, Argentine citizens held separately in Gaza for two years after being abducted on October 7, have spoken together for the first time about their ordeal. In a recent interview, they described enduring severe hunger, fear, and abuse, as well as the psychological torment of not knowing whether their family members were alive. David spent most of his captivity underground in tunnels, while Ariel was moved between homes and businesses above ground, both facing constant threats and violence.
The brothers recounted the pain of separation from their loved ones and the uncertainty that haunted them throughout their captivity. David was taken with his wife and daughters, and on the 49th day, separated from them without any news of their fate. Ariel, abducted from the kibbutz with his partner, also lived in constant anxiety about his family's safety. Both described the harsh conditions, including severe food shortages and ongoing psychological abuse.
Since their release, David and Ariel have been undergoing psychological treatment and trying to rebuild their lives. They emphasized the lasting impact of their captivity and the challenges of moving forward. The brothers also called attention to the hostages who remain in Gaza, urging that their release must be a priority.
