Review of anti-Semitism in UK schools

The Education Secretary has announced a review into anti-Semitism in schools following a sharp decline in the number of schools commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day since the October 2023 attacks in Israel. Concerns have been raised about schools' ability to address hatred and prejudice, highlighted by the cancellation of a Jewish Member of Parliament's visit to a school after pressure from pro-Palestine campaigners. The number of secondary schools participating in Holocaust Memorial Day events has dropped from over 2,000 in 2023 to fewer than 1,200 in 2024, with some attributing the decline to fears of backlash from parents and students. Education leaders and Jewish community figures have stressed the importance of Holocaust education, warning that avoiding the topic risks undermining the lessons of history and fostering further prejudice.
