US President Donald Trump sparked controversy after telling Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he no longer felt 'an obligation to think purely of Peace' following Norway's decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize. The exchange began with a message from Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, urging de-escalation on global issues including Greenland, Gaza, and Ukraine. Trump responded by linking his stance on Greenland to the Nobel Peace Prize, stating that he could now focus on what is 'good and proper' for the United States and emphasizing the need for 'Complete and Total Control of Greenland.'
Støre clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government. The dispute intensified after Trump announced a 10 percent import tax on goods from several European countries, including Norway, aiming to pressure negotiations over Greenland. The move drew strong rebukes from European leaders, and thousands of Greenlanders protested against any attempt to seize their territory, with Greenland's Prime Minister affirming their commitment to dialogue and international law.
Trump's pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize has been ongoing, highlighted by his recent receipt of a medal from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
