Iraq's judiciary announced it will begin legal proceedings against detainees from the Islamic State group who were recently transferred from Syria as part of a United States operation. The transfer comes as Syrian government forces take control of former Kurdish-held areas, including detention centers holding thousands of suspected jihadists and their families. So far, Iraq has confirmed the arrival of 150 detainees out of the 7,000 the United States aims to move. Iraqi authorities emphasized that all suspects, regardless of nationality or rank, will face the country's judicial process.
The situation follows a deal integrating Kurdish administration into the Syrian state, with the government assuming responsibility for Islamic State prisoners. Meanwhile, over 134,000 people have been displaced in northeast Syria due to recent clashes, according to the United Nations migration agency. Iraq continues to prosecute terrorism cases and has established a center to document crimes committed by the group, serving as a hub for international judicial cooperation.
