William Shakespeare was a black woman, new book claims

A new book by feminist historian Irene Coslet claims that the works attributed to William Shakespeare were actually written by Emilia Bassano, a poet with connections to the Tudor court. Coslet argues that Bassano, described as a black Jewish woman, used the pen-name 'Shakespeare' and that her plays were later stolen by the man from Stratford-upon-Avon. The book suggests that Bassano's identity was erased in favor of the narrative of a 'white' male genius, and explores her multicultural background as a source of literary expertise. The theory challenges the long-held belief in Shakespeare's authorship and highlights ongoing debates about the true origins of the famous plays.
