A team of forty cyclists from London has embarked on a challenging 550-kilometer ride from Makkah to Madinah in Saudi Arabia to raise funds for children in developing countries with congenital heart defects. Led by Shamsul Abdin, the group will face extreme weather conditions, including scorching heat and sandstorms, as they cycle through the Hejaz region. The annual 'Hijrah Ride' retraces the historic migration route and has grown in popularity, inspiring hundreds of others to take part over the years.

The cyclists, ranging in age from 18 to 65 and coming from cities across the United Kingdom, aim to raise about £250,000 this year for the 'Little Hearts' project, which will fund life-saving surgeries for children in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since its inception, the ride has raised nearly £923,000 for charitable causes, including emergency aid in Gaza and Sudan. The journey is supported by Muntada Aid, which provides logistical and financial backing, and has received warm hospitality from local communities along the route.

Abdin, who was recently recognized for his charitable efforts, notes that Saudi Arabia has become increasingly bike-friendly, with improved infrastructure and awareness. The ride not only raises vital funds but also fosters cultural exchange, as riders are often invited by locals to share meals and stories, highlighting the spirit of generosity in the region.
