Officials from the German federal railway system have proposed a new high-speed rail route between Hamburg and Hanover that would pass dangerously close to the historic loading ramp near Bergen-Belsen, where countless Holocaust victims, including Anne Frank, arrived before being taken to the concentration camp. The ramp stands as one of the few remaining authentic sites linked to the horrors of the Holocaust, serving as a focal point for annual commemorations and educational programs. Concerns have been raised by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial Site's director and staff, warning that construction could damage or destroy the ramp, violate the dignity of the site, and even disturb human remains. While an alternative route is feasible, advocates urge the transportation committee to reject the preferred route to safeguard this vital place of remembrance and respect for the victims.
