Israel Police are reportedly blocking military police from detaining individuals evading conscription in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, according to a summary of a meeting led by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. Military representatives at the meeting expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation, stating that police do not allow military police to operate in these areas and often release detained draft evaders with only a summons. Data discussed at the meeting revealed that around seventy-one thousand people are currently evading military service, with the majority coming from the ultra-Orthodox community. Despite a slight increase in enlistment rates among ultra-Orthodox individuals, officials say it remains insufficient to meet the military's needs or ensure equality. The current legislative proposal to regulate exemptions is seen as discouraging enlistment, as it would restore funding for religious schools, prompting calls for stronger economic sanctions to enforce conscription.
