Israeli authorities have detained several local officials and businesspeople suspected of diverting millions of dollars in aid intended for communities affected by the Israel-Hamas war. The arrests follow an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donations that surged after the attack on southern Israel in October 2023, which left thousands displaced and in need of support.
The funds, totaling at least $1.4 billion by March 2024, were sent by international donors to bolster social services and assist evacuees near the Gaza border and northern regions. Investigators believe that some local councils and municipal businesses received substantial amounts of these donations but failed to use them appropriately.
Corruption scandals involving public officials are not uncommon in Israel, with regular inquiries into misuse of funds at various levels of government.
